As the USS Discovery starts to explore the galaxy in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, the first stop is, understandably, to check-in on how the Planet Earth is doing. Unlike Battlestar Galactica searching for Earth forever, Discovery decided to get the whole Earth thing out of the way right away. In Episode 3, “People of Earth,” the crew returns to the home planet of the Federation and learns things are not remotely similar to how they left it....

The crew of the USS Discovery might be firmly established in a century well beyond the rest of Star Trek canon, but that doesn’t mean the rich history of the Final Frontier isn’t always with them. In fact, even the title of the very first episode of Star Trek: Discovery, Season 4, is an Easter egg. “Kobayashi Maru,” references Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and the famous no-win scenario first introduced in that film....

If you started watching new Star Trek in the past ten years, that means your introduction to the franchise might have been the J.J. Abrams reboot films. From 2005 to 2017, there wasn’t any new Trek on TV, making the movies the only representatives of new stories set in the Final Frontier. This was also true for a big chunk of the 80s, before The Next Generation debuted in 1987....

If the season 2 premiere of Star Trek: Picard was getting all the new pieces in place then the second episode was tossing them all out of an airlock and seeing who survives. Picard and the rest of the cast are transported to an alternate timeline that seems to be the work of Q. There they find a world that’s far more human centric, with Picard as an evil leader....

In “The Gathering Storm,” all the pieces fall into place. We now know how exactly Boba saved Fennec’s life and retrieved his ship. With his armor back after the events of The Mandalorian, he’s ready for the next step. That step? Getting Mos Espa’s crime families on board for an all-out war with the Pyke Syndicate. Because a lot of the episode rehashes familiar territory, we didn’t find as many new easter eggs and references in this episode of The Book of Boba Fett as usual....

Let’s think about Plagueis’ alternate sleeping habits for a second. Were Plagueis a light sleeper, Palpatine probably wouldn’t have been able to murder him in his slumber, which would have likely led to Plagueis killing the future Emperor before he even had a chance to become Supreme Chancellor in The Phantom Menace. This means Plagueis would have been the Dark Lord of the Sith in charge throughout the Prequel Trilogy....

Is it the colorful aesthetic of the world on-screen? Is it the funny voices of the cartoons and the playful interactions they have with one another? It’s all that but it’s also more. Good children’s shows understand that young ones are intelligent enough to grapple with concepts like right and wrong, friendship, family, and what it means to be creative. Kids are far more shrewd than adults give them credit for, therefore making a program for an age group that we have been out of touch with for decades presents a myriad of challenges....

Ever since Lena Luthor learned that her best friend Kara Danvers was secretly Supergirl, the relationship between the two women has been, well, fraught. They’ve argued, fought one another and even grudgingly worked together at various points during the course of this season. But they’ve made virtually no progress when it comes to patching up their broken friendship – and at this point, it’s not even clear if that’s possible....

Supernatural Season 13 Episode 16 This episode was a milestone. Supernatural did what only fanfics dared — crossover with Scooby Doo. And they did it well. Did it advance the season arc? Heck no. But what we got was an enjoyable popcorn romp through nostalgia, done in a distinctively Supernatural style. All season long I’ve been predicting that Jack would be the one to transport the boys into the cartoon. It was teased early in the season when he’s watching the cartoon on TV....

The self-contained directing/writing/producing/acting pair have made four feature films to date, each of them dealing in some way with the passage of time, the volatility of memory, and the warping of both....

The 100 Season 4 Episode 1 The 100 season 4 premiere has a lot of ground to cover, picking up immediately after the end of last season. We manage to see the power struggle for and selection of new leadership for the grounders, set off our season-long conflicts, and get a hint of the global destruction that is to come. We don’t have much action, world-building, or sweeping vistas in this episode, and so in that regard it feels much less expansive than other season openers....

The 100 Season 5 Episode 13 The 100 provided an unprecedented level of emotional whiplash with tonight’s season finale. The war for the last survivable land on earth was wrapped up rather tidily – a bit too tidily – by the 40-minute mark, leaving the last 20 minutes for an achingly beautiful ending that felt like it came from an entirely different show. Reminiscent of The Magicians’ “A Life in The Day,” and Red’s final speech in The Shawshank Redemption, the tear-jerking ending told the story of Monty and Harper’s life and death on board the ship while everyone else was in cryosleep, which eventually lead to humanity’s new home....

The Batman features a fairly radical reinvention of classic Gotham City villain, The Riddler. For most of Riddler’s pop culture history, he’s been a relatively harmless criminal genius. While lives have definitely been lost at his hand, he’s usually depicted as someone more interested in outsmarting Batman and the authorities than he is of taking lives. Sure, there have been exceptions (the serial killer Riddler in the Batman: Earth One series by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank springs immediately to mind), but he’s generally not a terribly bloodthirsty criminal....

“Beatle George Harrison, above, is due in court here today to answer assault charges,” John Lennon reads from a newspaper in a scene in Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back. “Harrison is accused of assaulting a photographer last May as he and Beatle Ringo Starr left a nightclub.” The accused looks fairly bewildered, as did much of the audience. The story intermittently creeps back into the documentary, making its presence known while Harrison largely ignores it and moves on....

The three-part documentary series is supposed to chronicle what has come to be known as the sad end of the longest cocktail party, and if the trailer and companion book are any indication, The Hobbit director makes it all look like the band’s films. A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, and Yellow Submarine were all comedies. Let It Be was the only drama, and even it had its light moments....
